Hi, Thanks so much for this excellent website! I had the best times of my growing up years in Taiping. I studied in Convent Taiping (primary & secondary) between 1979-1986 before leaving for Oz. It's a town where childhood playmates stay good friends for a lifetime. I enjoyed cycle to school via the lake gardens, hang out at cross street for the saturday "kai see min" or at larut matang supermarket - especially downstairs for their ice kacang. I enjoyed the camping days and also my guiding activities. I am honoured to know many wonderful people in this little sleepy town - and trying to get in touch with more old friends esp from the convent & camping days. I'm currently living between Syd/Melb and KL; and since I travel a lot within AsiaPac, it would be lovely to meet other Taiping folks living overseas. Drop me a mail if you remember me. Angeline

Hi, Thank you for the lovely photos, especially the school photos of "All gals" TMGS,that i attended 17 years ago from 1987-1988. Loved the food and the friendly Taiping people. Taiping the coolest town to visit or to live. I was a Taiping resident until 1988, now married and reside in New Zealand - where we won every academy awards nominated for "The Lord of the Rings". And also filmed in NZ, The Last Samurai - by Tom Cruise =oD NZ, is a paradise to live so as Taiping, a peace and quiet town, with fresh air and the Lake Gardens for jogging / TaiChi. I would bring my husband home one day to show him aroud Taiping which i am proud of. I wish to get in touch with all my old class-mates, those attended - Hua Lian 3, Taiping, back in 1982 - 1986. The one and the only one class monitor we all knew since our Hua Lian 3 - primary school together - Teh Soon Kuan.(does it ring a bell?) and i also wish to get in touch with a long lost best friend, "Teh Sok Sim".
If you know her, please kindly forward my email address (francesl@paradise.net.nz">francesl@paradise.net.nz) to Teh Sok Sim, i would really love to catch up with her.
Thanks. Cheers,Frances Leong

I do not know who to say hello to and thanks for being the info provider of both Taiping and Penang. I am Li See Chiang, also known also Jessie by my friends. I used to live in Taiping for three years and have been in Penang (Bukit Mertajam & Tanjung Bungah) most of my life. So it is to say I was borned Penangite. Ironically, I am currently engaged to a Taipingite whom I met during my childhood years in Taiping. Now that I'm in the US studying, my fiance and I really miss home. We wouldn't know what place on earth would make us feel more homely than these two places. Just looking at the Lake Garden picture has already brought in so many fond memories of us use to sit there feeding the fishes. Thanks for the website!

Those in year 1976 form 5 KE Vll, will remember Pak Long, Junjung, Pak Ho, Francis Chang.... It is always nice to go back and have a short break in good old Taiping. We still have our old shoptlot at Market road and what a big difference. Lately I was back, and traffic was pretty congested especially near the Public Photo and the surrounding coffee shops in that area.

Was born in 1959, Pokok Assam and did manage to finish my form 5 in KE VII back in 76', but no further. I remember all mouth watering good food in Taiping- Poppiah in Tai Chen, Rojak & lok Lok at Rex, Tau Chooi, Won Ton noodles, Laksa at Coronation pool, Char Kueh Teow at the cashier market and lots more. One of the best water fall spots is found here Austin & Burmese & Mah Kaw Teong pools. It is always a joy to get away from it all to my hometown for a good rest and food.

Seeing the memorial plaque on St Louis Church (previous website), brought memories of my father (Mr PI Idiculas) who was an WWII ex-serviceman (Queen Victoria's Madras Sappers & Miners, Royal Indian Engineers, British Indian Army) who had fought in the Burma theatre of war. Having later (Sept 45) landed in Port Dickson. (A memorial stands on Morib beach to mark the occasion. One of the greatest military landings in history). He was stationed in KL and Penang. Later posted to Bandung, Indonesia for peace-keeping. In about 1948, his unit was disbanded/demobilised. Sent back to India.

After a short home leave in India, he returned and joined the British Army and was stationed in Taiping. This time with REME. My mother later joined him in Taiping in 1949. As for accommodation, his Unit CO (one Maj Parmenter) had a word with the famous Catholic priest, Father Clement and arranged temporary accommadation at the Old Convent. They lived there till their Quarters became available at Kamunting Garrison. The name of a John Thivvy rings a bell. He was an ex-INA officer. It is said that he was one of the first founders of the MIC whic is said to be the first political paty of Malaya. He later became High Commissioner of India to Malaya. We were very close to his family and his in-laws. I had the pleasure of meeting his son, Nirvan in Sydney a few years ago. The women in that family were a great help to my mother when I was born.

I was the 3rd child to be born in the Taiping BMH (British Military Hospital) on 4th March 1950. My British Army birth certificate records the MO in attendance as Dr ME York-Moore, Capt, RAMC.

As I was a premature child and had to stay on for a few weeks extra. At about the time I came off the incubator, the hospital was opened by Lord Louis Mountbatten, last viceroy of India and the GOC South East Asia command. He (and lady Elvira)visited my mother and I at the hospital bedside. He had me on his lap. I was told that he spent a fairly long time talking to my parents as he loved his Indian "friends" dearly. My brother Alexander(Joey) was also born at the BMH (in 1951).

I was baptised in the old Taiping Anglican (Church of England) church by a minister (pastor/father) of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, the Rev VE Thomas).

I still have memories of my first British Army Garrison Children's Christmas Party. Something I looked forward to till dad left the army in 1963.

We left Taiping for Kluang, Johor in 1952. I have never been back since except for passing through by train on a couple of ocassions. My parents often mentioned a departmental store, similar to Globe Silk Store and wned by Sindhi merchants, and the name D'Silva come to mind. Also a Mr Krishnan who was in REME as well. He later became a councillor, I believe. We then moved to Singapore in 1957 and back to Johor Bahru in 1963. Dad demobbed from the British Army in 1963. Both my parents have passed away in 1992. I hope to visit some of their old friends to recap some old memories.

I now live in Sydney, Australia. It is great reading responses from your website visitors. I can quite share the memories of some of your visitors. Great site. Keep it up. I will come back when I get more info. May be some old photos as well. I'd love to hear from people with common links.

Jacob Idiculas

I am Yuen Yuet Leng. Born in 1927 I am one of the shrinking group of survivors of Senior Cambridge Class 1947 in KE7 in Taiping where names of schools, roads and places will never change for political or narrow communal expediencies. Would like to hear from or of former classmates or friends from other classes who are still around from that great and multiracial school of ours. May we in life live up to MAGNIS NOMINIS UMBRA which had made us what we are, where we are and how and what we will leave behind. News from families of those who had passed on will be appreciated. Also news on former Malayan and Commonwealth comrades in arms against communist terrorists in the Grik, Lenggong, Sungei Siput and Ipoh areas (1950-1963) will most welcomed.

Wow!It must have been fate for me to stumbled onto this site. One word to describe it .... fabulous! Was back home on September 2003 to attend a friend's wedding. It seems to be the only reason to go back home(Chinese New Year not counted, lol).Truth is been buzy with work and study i haven't gone home for CNY celebration for 2 years straight. I still remember my school SGI(Once a Georgian, always a Georgian).Still remember most of my old classmates.Sigh! The food!Glorious!Fantastic! Lake Garden? Oh!It is much much beautiful now. Each year something seems to be changing at home. But,I'm sure we all know that the memories is still there for us to feel. To describe Taiping: 1)The hills(Maxwell Hill or rather "kopi suah") 2)The lake 3)The waterfalls 4)The swimming pool 5)Food,etc. I still remember the time spent at the foot of Maxwell Hill playing in the shallow and clear river. Echo of the splashing joy, Chorus of the screaming girls and boys, These memories, this "toy", It's better than a thousand dollar koi.
